DEPARTMENT OF LIBERAL STUDIES

About the School

The Department of Liberal Studies was established to assist with students' choice of majors, and students apply and are admitted to one of three faculties (Humanities and Social Sciences, Engineering, and Nature and Life). After entering the school, students spend their first year exploring majors by taking introductory courses and common liberal arts courses in various departments. When they advance to their second year, they choose their primary majors, with the Humanities and Social Sciences and Engineering faculties allowing students to choose majors within the two faculties, and the Nature and Life faculty allowing students to choose majors broadly.

Major Course Guide

The Department of Liberal Studies operates a free elective course in addition to the basic liberal arts requirement for students to explore their majors.

The "Major Exploration Seminar" of the Department of Liberal Studies consists of classes that help freshmen to choose a major that matches their aptitudes and capabilities so that they can belong to the university and successfully settle down in university life, and classes that help them with practical academic work, such as career and major exploration classes and how to write reports for each university department. Students spend one hour each week in team teaching for major exploration, self-understanding, reading, collecting and organizing information, and writing reports on their majors and careers, and then write and present the results of their exploration.

Basic Liberal Arts Requirement 1-2 is a course designed to form a community through sound values based on the dignity of human beings and the Catholic University's educational goals of truth, love, and service. Through Keystone Design: Humanities and Creativity, we aim to foster intellectuals with creativity and humanism, and through Keystone Design: Creative Design, we aim to foster collaborative leaders with complex problem-solving capabilities. In addition, Life Pathways and Career Design is a course designed to help students set career goals and design college life accordingly so that they can successfully enter society. This course is designed to help students set career goals and design a college experience that will prepare them for a successful transition into the workforce.

Academic Activities

The Department of Liberal Studies organizes and offers a variety of activities to help students choose a major. Every semester, we invite outside experts to give a special lecture on career exploration and provide information on the process of career exploration. This allows students to understand the practical concerns that arise when deciding on a career path.

We also provide a venue for ongoing interaction with seniors in the Humanities and Social Sciences, Engineering, and Nature and Life faculties. We also organize departmental presentations by professors from each department. This allows students to get answers to their questions about major selection, major-related studies, and career paths after graduation from the perspective of first-year students.

In addition, we provide more specialized information to help students choose their future career based on a deeper understanding of their major. Meanwhile, the Department of Liberal Studies and the Student Government Association Executive Board run various clubs to help students enjoy their college life. They organize events to help students connect with their seniors and share useful information to help them in their career and college life.
